When secular is no more

Secular was a word that was never meant to exist. When God created heaven, earth and all creatures, everything was meant to be in perfect harmony with their Creator. He was supposed to be part of our daily lives, involved with us in a perfect relationship.

But man chose to change the direction of the original plan and now we have two categories for everything we interact daily: secular and religious.

We have secular jobs, secular artists that we enjoy, secular books we read, secular TV shows we watch, etc.

Imagine for a moment that the Fall didn’t happen.

Look around, and you will see every single person connected to God, in a relationship with Him. So even tough you’re not a minister, God is part of everything you do, including your job. You can’t imagine separating Him from it.

Imagine you turn on the TV, and even tough you’re not watching a sermon, it shows people engaged in a relationship with God, living their lives.

Imagine you’re reading a book, and although it talks about a non-religious topic (like cooking), the author can’t help but involve God in their writing.

There’s no separation. The worldly routines and mundane tasks are involved with God.

Man created a separation from God, and that separation allowed us to label everything around us as religious or secular.

But one day, everything will finally be as it was supposed to be all along. One day, God will redeem all creation and establish a new heaven and new earth which will bring creation and Creator back together.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.
I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:1-4)

I long for the day when “secular” is no more.

  1. Good point Cris. Too bad we have separated as we have. When God is involved, all things can be “spiritual.” Art. Music. Sports.

    • Bill, you’re right. Sometimes I think we get too used to separating everything. I do. I classify my books separately, as christian and non-christian, and I do the same with music and movies.
And at work, I used to feel not so comfortable to really speak out about my faith, mainly when I went to customer’s sites. Some people don’t like it when you do.
But I really want to make my life more and more spiritual centered.

  2. …when secular is no more…

    I long for that too.

I also like the comment from bill above that when God is involved, all things can be spiritual.

    • Yes, Lisa, I also agree with both of you!

  3. I haven’t even thought of this word in such a way. WOW. I like it.

Ah, when secular is no more… That would be awesome.

    • Yes, it would. Thanks for your comment, Zee!

  4. What a lovely take what if secular was no more (and it will be some day – – soon)
May we all be so God blended that the world will only see Jesus when they view us. Awesome post!

  5. I like your take on the word “Secular”. I can’t wait, either, for time “when the secular is no more”. Blessings to you, Cris, as you seek for new direction for your life!

  6. Amen! When I’m reading the last few chapters of Revelation and watch “secularism” be destroyed and the correct New Earth/New Age/New Life come to pass, I get excited every time. So pleased that the day will come.

    • It will! Thank you for your comment, Joanne!
